Empowering family self-efficacy through social tourism

Lead Research Organisation: University of Nottingham
Department Name: Nottingham University Business School

Abstract

This project aims to understand how families that are struggling to cope, and facing complex multi-dimensional challenges, could benefit from the shared experiences of a family holiday. The project aims to understand how families benefit from a break away from problems together, and how the experiences gained contribute to improvements in self-efficacy. The ultimate aim is to help severely disadvantaged families become more resilient and better able to cope with their financial, health (mental and physical) and situational circumstances, enabling them to work towards improving their lives.

The research will consist of mixed methods approaches, including multiple depth interviews with case study families at different stages of their contact with the partner organisation, before, and after the holiday. These interviews will include all generations to understand the contextual issues and experiences.

This method will be complemented by the use of surveys measuring self-efficacy, amongst the case study group as well as a wider range of families being supported by the charity, and a control sample of the wider population.
