Exploring the Distant Universe with the James Webb Space Telescope

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sussex
Department Name: Sch of Mathematical & Physical Sciences

Abstract

The upcoming Webb Telescope promises to revolutionise our understanding of the early Universe, and in particular the formation and evolution of the first galaxies. This project will focus primary on preparations for both Webb and other upcoming facilities. Specifically:
- Development of a new machine learning based method for determining the UV luminosity function and its evolution in the early Universe together with its application to existing archival data.
- Making detailed predictions for Webb, Euclid, and SKA based on galaxy formation simulations.
= Aiding in the development an analysis pipeline for JWST observations made as part of the Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science survey.
