Understanding Deep Learning

Deep learning has produced a revolution in machine learning for some specific tasks. However, our current theoretical understanding remains poor. This PhD will try to develop a better theoretical understanding. We will start by looking at ensembling and the dynamics of learning and how this affects generalisation error. Our belief is that by improving our theoretical understanding we can develop more effective learning machines and potentially extend techniques to a wider range of applications.
