Generation of acoustic sound in water by pulsed high power electrical discharges

Lead Research Organisation: Loughborough University
Department Name: Wolfson Sch of Mech, Elec & Manufac Eng

Abstract

The generation of powerful pulsed acoustic sound in water is based on the spark breakdown produced between a pair of immersed metallic electrodes by applying a voltage impulse to develop an electric field higher than the critical breakdown field of water. The electric field-time breakdown characteristics of water mainly depend on the water conductivity and on the rise time and duration of the voltage impulse and breakdown mechanisms were identified.

The main aim of the research is to improve the understanding of the physics and technology related to underwater discharges for their potential use as a powerful acoustic source for various applications.
