Black holes and neutron stars in the nearest galaxies

Lead Research Organisation: Durham University
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

We will investigate the nature of ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) using observational data. In particular, we will use data from the new eROSITA X-ray survey - and its time domain analysis group - to search for new ULXs, and to study known objects. We will search for new pulsating objects, and other indicators that can help us set a minimum fraction of ULXs that contain neutron stars; and use the X-ray colours and/or stacked X-ray spectra of the population to investigate the poorly-understood physics of the highest rates of accretion onto neutron stars.
