Foundations of quantum mechanics

Lead Research Organisation: University of York
Department Name: Mathematics

Abstract

The project belongs to the foundations of quantum mechanics. This theory has properties and predicts phenomena that do not possess classical counterparts; examples are entanglement, uncertainty relations, the impossibility to assign values to incompatible observables and the existence of non-classical causal structures. The research project will involve the identification of features of quantum theory that give rise to these phenomena and developing an understanding of whether alternative theories exist that produce similar (or other) effects. This will be done by embedding quantum theory into a class of more general theories and by investigating the resulting differences.
