African swine fever virus multigene family interferon inhibitory proteins: Functions and application to vaccine development

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Interdisciplinary Bioscience DTP

Abstract

African swine fever is one of the most devastating swine diseases and there are currently no commercially available vaccines to prevent it. This project aims to advance the development of a gene-deleted
live attenuated vaccine against African Swine Fever Virus. We'll investigate how the viral Multigene Family proteins function to inhibit type I interferon induction and whether they act upon other host pathways. Our work will help elucidate how these proteins act to subvert the host innate immune response, and their suitability for deletion from the viral genome for the development of effective and safe vaccines.
