Abstract

Although I have not currently decided on any specific research questions, an area of research focus which I feel combines my expertise and interests, is to explore whether participatory design/ co-design can improve both the psychological acceptance of, and development of innovative assistive technologies (AT), aimed at improving user health and wellbeing. I feel that this is a research area that could be applied to many different participant groups, such as people with dementia, or children with learning difficulties, where innovation in AT can play a role in treatment, recovery, and supporting people to live the life they want to lead. It would refine methodological frameworks of how participatory design/ co-design can best be applied in delivering successful technologies. Finally, I believe that developing innovative AT within the School of Computer Science under the lens of participatory design/ co-design would only enhance the leading reputation of the School and wider department. I concede that further reading and guidance will be required to develop a more specific research question.
