Home from home? Constructions of identity and the British warship interior, 1880-1939

Lead Research Organisation: Royal Holloway University of London
Department Name: History

Abstract

Warships were key to Britain's naval strategy and occupied a fundamental role in the British national psyche. They were also, however, important institutional spaces that shaped both naval personnel and wider perceptions of class, race, gender and age that went beyond the naval world. This studentship would be the first project for this period devoted to exploring the warship as an institutional space that shaped the experiences and identities of its inhabitants. The project is designed to bring a new research agenda developed in social and cultural history together with expertise and archival holdings at RMG to offer an exciting new opportunity to develop an original research project with strong support for career development.
