Enhancing MRI assisted neuro-stimulation electrode placement for paediatric subjects

Lead Research Organisation: King's College London
Department Name: Imaging & Biomedical Engineering

Abstract

The aim of the project is to 1) develop and test methods to image deep brain nuclei that must be precisely targeted for placement of neuro-stimulation electrodes and 2) to devise, simulate and test methods to safely insert electrodes and verify their precise placement using MRI.
The target population for the proposal methods is paediatric -children have the most to gain from neuro-stimulation owing to the greater plasticity of their brains compared to older subjects, but they are also most challenging subjects with the most to lose through poor procedures and sub-optimal treatment.
