Investigating Embedded Sensors and Actuators for Robotic Materials such as an Active Metamaterials

Abstract

The aim of this research project is to investigate the integration of sensors and actuators within a material's lattice structure without compromising the mechanical properties of the material. The embedded sensing and actuation is designed to modulate the properties of that material, such as the effective density and stiffness. The purpose of this is to provide performance that is both adaptable to user and environmental demands and beyond what is possible with a conventional material structure alone.

Description • This award has further investigated the effects of traditional active noise control systems on the effective material properties by providing physical insight how the active control systems manipulate wave propagation within a one-dimensional anechoically terminated duct.
• This award has investigated whether active control can be used to control the effective material properties directly to achieve broadband negative effective material properties as a potential active acoustic metamaterial unit cell.
Exploitation Route This research may enable the realisation of broadband novel technologies such as acoustic cloaking and acoustic superlenses and may also be beneficial in active noise control and wave steering applications.

Results and Impact The Science and Engineering Day is a free family-friendly event, where around 200 people attend, taking place across Highfield Campus and Boldrewood Innovation Campus, packed with hundreds of interactive hands-on activities, workshops, live shows, art performances and laboratory tours from across all our Faculties. The purpose of this event was to show the facilities and research that is going on at the University of Southampton in order to inspire and influence prospective students and staff to research a science or engineering subject at the University of Southampton.
