Using social media data to study crime and safety

Lead Research Organisation: CARDIFF UNIVERSITY
Department Name: Sch of Social Sciences

Abstract

Social media data provides unprecedented opportunities to study social processes. The data produced by sites such as Twitter provide information on events as they unfold, revealing details of who, what, where, and when in near real time. This project will focus on the application of these new forms of data to the study of crime and security. The successful candidate will examine how these data can be used to develop new measures to estimate signals of crime and disorder. The successful candidate will use the COSMOS platform to collect and visualize data, ahead of the development of measures for statistical modelling.
