Titanium Metal Matrix Composites

Lead Research Organisation: University of Birmingham
Department Name: Metallurgy and Materials

Abstract

The aim of the study will be to determine the effects of stress ratio, temperature and environment on fatigue crack growth resistance and interfacial properties. A series fatigue tests will be carried out at RT and elevated temperatures in air and in vacuum for a variety of stress ratios on a through thickness edge-notched Ti-6Al-4V/SCS-6 metal matrix composite. Interfacial properties were assessed using continuous displacement push out testing. Fractography will be carried out post testing on fatigued samples to study fibre fracture, pull-out lengths and debond ed regions. Fatigue crack growth resistance, interfacial properties and fibre pull out will be compared.
