CDT Tribology - Development of single cylinder engine tests for engine oil tribofilm study

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leeds
Department Name: Mechanical Engineering

Abstract

Testing engine components and tribofilms formed on them has highlighted a gap on understanding of low friction tribofilm formation on engine components and their contribution to the fuel economy. This proposed project will focus on recommissioning the single cylinder Hydra engine available at University of Leeds as a rig for studying lubricant additives tribochemistry and tribofilm formation. The project aims to recommission the single cylinder engine for running motored tribological tests for studying the low friction tribofilm formation and removal in realistic conditions.
