Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Monocular Navigation and Scanning.

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Electronic and Electrical Engineering

Abstract

Description: This project is concerned with the novel approaches for safe navigation of fixed-wing UAVs when the usual positioning mechanisms and sensors are not available during a flight and also in challenging environments. With the emerging tight regulations on UAV navigation concerning civilian safety, having such a functionality on-board is very beneficial. This research will focus on employing multi-modal sensors available on-board, signal and data analysis and machine learning techniques for research and development of the new safety-aware navigation system. In order to address the on-board power limitations and the requirement of fast responses, the project intends to investigate on developing low complexity algorithms that are capable of real-time operation.
