Mathematical Modelling and Robust Parametric Estimation for Thermal Runaway in Li-ion Batteries

Lead Research Organisation: University of Sheffield
Department Name: Chemical & Biological Engineering

Abstract

The purpose of the proposed project is twofold:
1. To fundamentally extend the current canonical modelling approach for thermal runaway of Li-ion batteries by incorporating the dynamic behaviour of the produced gases within the cell and during release;
2. To address shortcoming with respect to the uncertainty in empirical coefficients by performing a robust parameter estimation, using the above model as a basis, of the reactions and their kinetics.
