Youth engagement and empowerment through heritage: approaching new methods of empowering young people through non-traditional uses of the museum setti

Lead Research Organisation: CARDIFF UNIVERSITY
Department Name: Sch of Social Sciences

Abstract

The aim of the project is to investigate and document, through a sociological lens, new ways of working with young people through Amgueddfa Cymru's Kick the Dust program. Key questions include: how do young people engage with heritage collections? How can museum sites improve their working relationships with young people through events and voluntary roles in a way that encourages engagement? How do digital spaces interact with museum culture? The proposal aims to use innovative qualitative and visual methods and co-production in research design that will lead to impact upon participatory approaches developed and adopted by the museum sector in Wales.
