A generalised theory of bilingual code-switched syntax for Lexical-Functional Grammar (LFG)

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Linguistics Philology and Phonetics

Abstract

The project is predominantly composed of a series of experiments examining the syntactic properties of bilingual code-switched sentences, with a particular focus on English-German and English-Japanese code-switching. By examining native speaker judgements regarding the syntactic constraints on code-switched sentences, I hope to provide evidence regarding how syntactic constraints are generated in bilingual code-switched contexts, and using this evidence, to present an initial formalisation for a generalised theory of bilingual code-switched syntax for Lexical-Functional Grammar.
