Theory and Practice of Ecocide Law in a UK Context: A legal geographical analysis of the principles of ecocide and the practical implications of defen

The debate around criminalising environmental destruction through the introduction of ecocide law has gained ground over the past decade, most recently capturing the public's attention on placards at climate change demonstrations. A literature review reveals that aligning UK law with the principles of ecocide has not been worked through. Given the incentive afforded by the climate emergency (Hansard, 2019), there is a case for preparations to be conducted using empirical evidence and stakeholder engagement. This research will explore principles of ecocide, review ecocide law in different geographic contexts, and assess the practical implications of defending nature should the crime of ecocide be introduced in the UK.
