Mathematical modelling of biological flows

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Applied Maths and Theoretical Physics

Abstract

Weida Liao will carry out research towards a PhD degree in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics at the University of Cambridge. Her research will be on modelling the biological locomotion of cells. It is known that algal cells actively swim in the ocean in response to chemical and light cues. During her PhD, Weida Liao will use mathematical modelling to predict and understand the dynamics of the cells observed in real life. She will develop mathematical and computational models in order to develop an understanding of the biophysics and the biological fluid dynamics of swimming algae and their dynamics in a fluctuating environment.
