Abstract

Technical Summary

Turnip yellows virus (TuYV) is potentially limiting the yield of oilseed rape in the UK, but little is known about the disease. Moreover, the impact of TuYV could have been overlooked because the symptoms of infection are not readily recognisable, and can be mistaken for the effects of stress and nutritional deficiencies. The main vector is the aphid Myzus persicae, although other aphid species, including Acrythosiphpon pisum, can transmit the virus. The aim of the research in this PhD project is to provide more information about the transmission and spread of TuYV in oilseed rape, understand how this affects yield and oil quality between John Innes Centre, Broom’s Barn, the School of Biological Sciences at the University of East Anglia and Velcourt, the farm management company.
