| Description | LHCb upgrade |
| Organisation | European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) |
| Department | Large Hadron Collider Beauty Experiment (LHCb) |
| Country | Switzerland |
| Sector | Public |
| PI Contribution | The UK is a driving force in the Upgrade. UK groups pioneered the initial physics studies and supplied the first Upgrade Coordinator. UK physicists prepared the Physics chapter of the LoI and several of the sub-detector sections, and have had a similarly prominent role in the writing of the FTDR. A UK physicist is Coordinator for the Ring-Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) upgrade, UK physicists are central to the Vertex Locator (VELO) upgrade activities, and the UK is also represented on the five-person "Upgrade Steering Group". The UK LHCb institutes are therefore ideally positioned to lead the upgrade of the experiment consolidating the dominant role they have achieved on the current detector. |
| Collaborator Contribution | The LHCb collaboration comprises 60 institutes worldwide, and has 624 signing authors. All research and design work is performed in collaboration. |
| Impact | Physics data taking is expected to start in 2018 |
| Start Year | 2008 |
| Title | Timepix |
| Description | The Timepix bump-bonded pixel readout chip, used for the upgraded VELO, is also utilized by the UK PImMS project. This involves the development of fast, pixelated sensors for imaging of low-energy ions coupled to time-of-flight mass spectrometers, enabling high-precision imaging for molecular microscopy and atom-probe tomography. Patents for this technology were granted in 2008, 2010 and 2011. |

| Title | RICH upgrade |
| Description | Several photon-detector technologies have been innovated by the RICH project. We are currently working with two manufacturers: Photonis/DEP and Hamamatsu to improve their hybrid-photon detectors (HPDs) and MaPMT tubes, respectively. We are also working with Photek/UK to produce micro-channel plate (MCP) photon detectors for LHCb/TORCH applications, to develop customized active area and pixel granularity MCPs which can survive for several years in high radiation environments. All these photon devices are very promising for use in medical imaging and positron emission tomography (PET). UV/Visible/IR detectors |

| Title | VELO upgrade |
| Description | For the VELO, LHCb has pioneered n+p sensors, now the baseline for ATLAS and CMS upgrades. The sensors have found widespread use in spin-off applications, they have stimulated industry (Stevenage circuits), and have been used at an NHS hadron therapy centre. Prototype LHCb Upgrade pixel detectors have been tested at the Diamond synchrotron and have inspired new detector designs they are developing for their beamlines. We will continue to work with our industrial partners to produce state-of-the art sensor technologies for the Upgrade and other impact applications. Radiation hard detectors |

| Description | Outreach |
| Form Of Engagement Activity | A press release, press conference or response to a media enquiry/interview |
| Part Of Official Scheme? | No |
| Geographic Reach | International |
| Primary Audience | Media (as a channel to the public) |
| Results and Impact | LHCb-UK is fully committed to an active programme of outreach and dissemination. In the media, we have stimulated public dialogue through film, radio and press. LHCb members have hosted short films for CERN, shortlisted by film festivals in 2011 and 2012, guested on LHC documentaries (BBC4, Discovery Channel, Horizon, Bang Goes the Theory and Youtube: The matter with Antimatter). Numerous contributions in the broadcast media have been made by LHCb-UK members on BBC News 24, BBC local radio stations, World Service News-hour, Radios 4 and 5 and international media (various stations). Print articles include many national newspapers and online (BBC News Online). VELO modules have been exhibited at the Royal Society Summer exhibition, at Microcosm (CERN), and will form part of the Science Museum LHC touring exhibition. LHCb physicists host VIP tours; examples of visitors to LHCb being the Science Minister, the Science Select Committee and several university vice-chancellors. We also regularly conduct LHCb public visits, and are fully engaged in the UK Masterclass programmes. One of the LHCb-UK groups hosts the first Science Museum Fellow of Modern Science who has played a primary role in the Collider exhibition at the London Science Museum and Manchester Museum Of Science and Industry (MOSI) see above. |
