Monolith Enhanced Cabin Air Filtration (MECAF)

Lead Participant: IMMATERIAL LTD

Abstract

Fume events are rare but when they occur, they can have a severe and tragic impact on human life. Many toxic compounds have been associated with fume events, some of which current technologies are unable to remove. Immaterial is an advanced materials company with unique cutting-edge technology for the filtration and trapping of toxic compounds. In partnership with the University of Cambridge and supported by Pall Aerospace, Immaterial will develop new materials based on this technology that enable, for the first time, filtration of the full range of known toxins from cabin air, thereby providing unique protection for cabin occupants.

In this project, Immaterial will run molecular simulations on compounds of interest in civil aviation to identify and develop high performance materials. These will be synthesised and formed in a structure appropriate for integration into test filtration systems. Results will be used to iterate and optimise the materials for further testing to confirm efficacy and robustness ahead of integration into aircraft filter systems.
