Abstract
The Liverpool Planetaquarium project, supported by UKRI via the Creative Catalyst 2023 fund, features a bespoke design of the UK's largest, mobile 360° fulldome projection cinema. It will serve to tour the country, bringing cutting-edge, immersive content and digital experiences to wide-ranging audiences.
Leading creative event specialists, Orb and mobile planetarium experts, Immersive Experiences are jointly developing a first pilot project to float a 21-metre geodesic dome at Royal Albert Dock, Liverpool.
The installation will run over nine weeks from November 2023 to January 2024, showcasing a newly-produced 45-minute film. The show is designed to educate families about the major scientific discoveries and break-through developments made in Liverpool over the last 500 years, interlinking themes of both planetary and marine sciences. Their hope is to inspire the next generation of young scientists to consider threats to our global climate and the impacts of rising sea levels on coastal cities, encouraging audiences to follow their passion for people and planet.
Through commissioning of the structures, content development and by opening new, skilled creative-industry technical jobs - the project aims to tour nationally and deliver other impactful, unique shows alongside novel technology-driven experiences with innovative applications of VR in the coming years.
