Ultrasonically Assisted Compounding and Masterbatch Production (USACT)

Lead Participant: COLLOIDS LIMITED

Abstract

The project is developing the use of ultrasonics (US) in compounding processes which make use of twin screw extrusion technology. The US ‘competency’ (method, equipment and expertise) is being developed to provide a leading masterbatch capability for packaging applications but will have real potential to be applied across a range of other market sectors/applications as well, such as agricultural, appliances, automotive, aerospace & transport, building and construction, cosmetics and pharmaceutical, electronics and electrical, household and industrial. The US assisted compounding technology is being investigated to assess its capability to improve polymer strength, electrical conductivity, fire retardancy, UV stability, anti-viral and anti-static properties, in addition to delivering sustainability benefits such as reduced energy consumption and the use of a higher percentage of recyclate in the compounding of composites at the end of life.
