Dem Dx Triage Platform

Lead Participant: DEM DX LIMITED

Abstract

* A well recognized challenge in the healthcare sector is the increasing demands on global health systems caused by a growing, ageing population and a constrained supply of doctors. NHS England estimate a financial care gap of £30 billion by 2021 in the UK.
* This care gap will partly be filled by allied health professionals (including nurses, occupational therapists and pharmacists) who will need to be trained to serve as the first point of care for patients. Their role will include identifying tests that need to be carried out on a patient and determining which specialists they should see.
* DemDx is a UK based, award winning medical technology SME focused on medical diagnostics and education. The current Medical Education product (MedEd) holds over 1,300 conditions, 50,000 medical clinical reasoning pathways and over 500 multimedia images and videos. Downloaded over 30,000 times across 176 countries, it is being used extensively as a medical educational tool both by medical institutions and individual students globally.
* This project aims to apply state of the art machine learning algorithms to the existing MedEd product to improve the accuracy and efficacy of presentation of clinical pathways so they can be used by AHPs. This Triage Platform (TP) will empower AHPs to provide the required level of care to patients in triage, reducing pressure on doctors and the wider NHS.
* For this project, we are collaborating with Moorfields Eye Hospital, an internationally renowned leading ophthalmology emergency center. Moorfields is an ideal partner as they provide both past case examples to improve the algorithms and also a training ground for the platform with their AHP nurses, who aim to provide 20% of primary care going forward. Moorfields also have 21 other triage sites where they are planning to implement TP on successful completion of the project.
* Above and beyond the commercial opportunities this project will provide to the UK, there are also direct and very tangible benefits of TP to the British public in terms of improved health care delivery and outcomes. Releasing pressure on a strained NHS will reduce waiting times and unnecessary referrals. Improving the accuracy of triage will also lead to more efficient treatment and ultimately better health outcomes for the UK public.
