DIABET - Innovate wrist device for high accuracy non-invasive blood glucose monitoring

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (diabetes) is a global epidemic. In 2014, there were 387 million people (8.3% of the world's population) living with diabetes; by 2035 this will have increased by 53% to 592 million. The UK's ageing population and increasing prevalence of obesity unfortunately means that ever greater numbers of the population are likely to be at risk of developing diabetes. The effect will be further burdening of an already strained NHS health care system, which is already spending an estimated £30,000 per minute on managing the disease. The majority of diabetes related health care costs (73%) can be attributed to the treatment of severe/severe acute complications e.g. heart diseases, stroke, amputations etc. However, many of these complications are predictable, preventable and/or can be reduced in severity by better self-management (SM) and control of the disease. A major challenge in the successful management of diabetes is the accurate self-monitoring of blood-glucose (SMBG). Unfortunately, the invasive nature (finger prick test) and cost of best-in-class current glucose monitoring solutions means SMBG remains low. Semi-invasive solutions are available, but these are also costly and require combination with daily blood testing using finger prick method. To address the need for a non-invasive continuous monitoring solution and enable better self-management of diabetes, the DIABET project will develop an innovate digital wrist **d**evice for h**i**gh **a**ccuracy non-invasive **b**lood-glucos**e** moni**t**oring. The combination of advanced sensors, data processing, and artificial intelligence developed by the consortium partners will enable the first truly non-invasive continuous monitoring solution for people with diabetes.
