Abstract

My two-volume critical history of French children's literature will be the first comprehensive study in English. Volume 1 (completed) explores the seventeenth-century beginnings (courtesy books, fables, and fairy tales), the twin imperatives of instruction and amusement dominating the eighteenth century and the impact of the French Revolution.
The second volume (current project) assesses the golden age of children's books from 1830 to the present day, including novels of adventure and domestic realism, the growth of specialist publishing houses (Hetzel and Hachette), twentieth-century innovations and the influence of English books.
