Operational Development Cell for EBM (Electron Beam Melting) - FILTON
Lead Participant:
GKN AEROSPACE SERVICES LIMITED
Abstract
Development of an Additive Manufacturing EBM (electron beam melting) Cell – FILTON is an initiative led by GKN Aerospace; aimed at working toward the first qualified Additive Manufacturing R&D facility in the UK, specializing in developing high-value/high-complexity items via 3D printing or Additive Manufacturing (AM). AM is a revolutionary manufacturing technology enabling the production of highly complex lightweight aircraft and aero-engine parts using advanced production systems by ‘printing’ parts layer by layer from metal powders. The advanced components produced by AM can be up to 50% lighter than conventional components, no waste, new and novel designs, resulting in substantial weight reduction and increased efficiency & performance. GKN, global Tier 1 supplier for the Aerospace and Automotive industries, brings a wealth of experience and background managing research & technology initiatives.
