Inheritors of the Diaspora: Contemporary Black British Drama in the New Millennium

Lead Research Organisation: Goldsmiths University of London
Department Name: Drama

Abstract

This study explores the plays of the new millennium produced by the black dramatists of contemporary Britain who create from an indigenous British identity and standpoint.
Centralising black experience, these writers present radical experiential revisions of national culture and contribute to debates on the state of British theatre and its future. Using sociocultural, theoretical frameworks to address the circumstances of theatre and performance for a range of dramatists, Kwei-Armah, Williams, River, Tucker Green, and Daley produces questions regarding cultural inheritances, diasporic and theatrical; where the legacies of restriction and exclusion interface with traditional British theatre heritage as formative influences.
