Abstract
The project will provide the first comprehensive description of post-Soviet Russian television culture. A semiotic analysis will explore the representational codes of various programme formats in terms of intercultural grafting of western genres Russian television has absorbed onto a residual Soviet viewing culture. The results will be tested against empirical. Region-specific analysis accounting for carious viewer reception strategies, and for the ways television culture is assimilated into the discourses of post-Soviet everyday life. The research will furnish insights into the development of civic consciousness in Russia, and into TV’s role in the construction of national and regional identities.
