High Volume E-Machine Stack Manufacture

Lead Participant: C.BRANDAUER & CO. LIMITED

Abstract

Given the rise of electric vehicles and more electrified systems it is strategically desirable for the UK to develop its own supply chain for the production and distribution of high performance electric machines at volume. This project seeks to close the gap in UK-based supply of rotor and stator lamination stacks whilst also meeting the demands of the automotive industry pushing for volume production of thinner laminations with finer details to meet higher performance requirements.

This project brings together Brandauer, an SME, with Jaguar Land Rover and WMG, and seeks to close the gap in the supply chain and produce thin laminates at quality, volume and cost necessary to meet automotive needs. The project aims to improve the production methods, tooling design, processes and material selection used in the creation of rotor and stator components to pave the way to a high volume production of thinner laminations in the UK.

Brandauer is already established as a market leader in high precision stampings and pressings in multiple sectors but does not currently have the capability to meet the demand of the automotive sector. This project will create the opportunity for Brandauer to not just enter the automotive supply chain, but to do so as best-in-class. As well as establishing a critical part of a UK based PEMD Supply Chain, this secure and expand the UK PEMD workforce, and enable cross-sector national and international sales. In addition to the direct impact to the members of the consortium, such a development would be key to driving the UK towards various government level targets and ambitions such as the net carbon 2050 target and the 2032/2040 petrol and diesel sale ban.
