Discovery Biocatalysts Limited - Market Research Proposal

Abstract

Discovery Biocatalysts Ltd is a new not-for-profit company seeking make enzymes generated
in academia commercially available for companies to purchase and use. Currently, we are
working with the University of Manchester. Enzymes are biological catalysts that enable
certain chemical reactions to be carried out that are difficult to achieve otherwise or may
involve environmentally unfriendly materials. For example, enzyme catalysed reactions are
usually carried out in water, not a volatile organic chemical (VOC) solvent. They are used in
household detergents to help remove dirt, in beer making and in the generation of biofuels.
That wonderful machine, the human body, has about ten thousand enzymes helping to keep it
functioning well with extremely high efficiency.
Discovery Biocatalysts wants to encourage the use of enzymes in industrial chemical
applications, to enable cleaner and greener processes to be developed. So we want to make it
easy for our customers to try our enzymes out in their processes and we want to make sure we
make commercially available enzymes that customers will be interested in purchasing and
testing. The market research we wish to carry out will help us understand what our customers
want, so we can develop a product offering that is easy to use, provides useful information
and hence has value.
As a not-for-profit company, Discovery Biocatalysts will use profits to create work under
contract for UK based product suppliers. The market research will help us achieve this goal
more efficiently and quicker.
