Cloud-based Service Access Gateway for wireless based Public Access Network

Lead Participant: AIRANGEL LIMITED

Abstract

Currently, the main business model for the provision of wireless infrastructure and services
for public access networks (PANs) is to provide the wireless infrastructure to the venues for
free, charge the guests to access the Internet and share the revenues generated with these.
Specifically for the hotel industry, high speed Internet access (HSIA) has now become a
musthave. With rising guest expectations and usage levels, just having HSIA is no longer
enough for hotels to be competitive. The system must be reliable, fast, and easy to use in order
to meet guest needs and more and more hotels and hotel chains want to be able to offer free
Internet access to their guests. This rapidly growing need is creating pressure on the old
business models, no longer suitable for this change in trends as well as pressure on the
technology. Although HSIA will lead to an increase in guests’ retention, the real opportunity
for hotels to monetize their HSIA networks is to leverage them for other applications.
Opportunities range from guest applications like VOD and VoIP to hotel productivity
applications like wireless handheld for front desk staff and restaurant servers. To address the
changing requirements of PANs, especially of hotels and conference centres AIRANGEL
wants to develop a cloud based Service Access Gateway to offer a truly standalone, Plug and
Play product to its clients. The current solutions require the installation of specialised
hardware, meaning an expensive and hard to configure solution for the installation and
maintenance PANs. The innovation is the development of a cloud based Service Access
Gateway to allow rapid, secure, reliable, intuitive and inexpensive configuration and
maintenance of complex, Public Access Networks, without the need for specialised hardware.
The key objective of this project is to assess the commercial viability of AIRANGEL
innovative solution, to establish a full validation of the market.
