Lightweight floating cover for ammonia control using white light

Lead Participant: BIOTEC LIMITED

Abstract

Biotec previously developed and successfully commercialised Aerocover a buoyant
lightweight covering floated on the surface of slurry tanks and lagoons to prevent the release
of Ammonia gas, Hydrogen Sulphide, other volatile organic compounds and to control
odours. The polymer coated aggregates in the presence of UV light capture and convert the
ammonia into nitrogen gas and water and absorb and capture gases when no UV light is
available.Large volumes of wastewater/effluent containing ammonia are being produced in
livestock practises and there is an ever increasing need for ammonia emissions control
through treatment in order to remove or convert the ammonia into a more stable fixed form.
While livestock provides various useful functions to society, more than 90 percent of total EU
ammonia emissions come from agriculture leading to an increasing pressure on (intensive)
livestock production systems to become more environmentally friendly. The objective of this
project is to assess the market potential for a novel and highly innovative floating cover of
slurry tanks and lagoons that can work not only with UV, but with the whole white light
spectrum, thus developing a product that is much more effective, last longer, is selfregenerating
and is more active at reducing emissions over a period of time.
