A new Investment Casting process to produce Titanium components with functionally graded hard ceramic insertions for bearing surfaces

Abstract

This project seeks to establish proof of market for a new process developed by ADML and its
collaborator Cti to produce cast components incorporating functionally graded Ti/ceramic
bearing surfaces, using a novel ceramic preform technique.
Market segmentation, size and value will be assessed and the competitive landscape mapped
to provide the business case information for exploitation of the process.
The study will focus on the functional requirements of candidate sectors, to focus initial
market penetration in the area with the most promising components for high added value from
the process. Technical specifications will be derived to meet the market needs.
Detailed assessment of competitive technologies will be vital in measuring commercial
viability of the new process. If these supply chain and technology analyses do indeed show
that the new process has a viable market, data from this project will enable processes to be
operated with
