Abstract

The application is presented by CDE Global; a leading developer and manufacturer of
systems for the production and processing of sand, aggregates and building waste. The key
USP for CDE is the application of aqueous washing processes for the production of value
added materials for the construction and other associated industrial processes. The aim for
CDE is the extension of knowledge, performance and system design for their aqueous
processes to retain their industry leading ethos. The focus of this particular application is the
extension in performance for a sand classification method called COUNTER FLOW
CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM, explicitly CDE wish to extend the performance envelope of
this classification process to ensure that finer sands (grain size of less than 0.5 mm diameter)
can be produced while maintaining commercially viable system efficiency levels.
To date CDE have employed an empirical methods for the development of our sand
classification systems, we now wish to develop a more theoretical understanding of the
process. This will enable us to develop higher performance and high (industrial capacity)
systems.
The commercial motivation for this application is the increasing demand for sands that have a
tight size tolerance. This increased tolerance demand is driven by processes and markets that
demand high specification sands, our target market is the production of sand processing
machines for sand producers that will then exploit the sands in market such as glass sand,
foundries, filtration, leisure sector and high performance sands for exploitation of oil and gas
reserves (frac sands).
This application will focus on the development of a 1/10 scale experimental test system sand
classification system that is developed in parallel with an experimental programme and
multiphase computational fluid dynamics module. Our aim is to develop a more far more
fundamental knowledge for the design and expected performance to drive future product
development.
