Run3D LIMITED: A NOVEL PROTOTYPE 3D-GAIT RETRAINING SYSTEM FOR DIAGNOSIS, CORRECTION AND REALTIME MONITORING OF JOINT AND MUSCULAR INJURIES.

Lead Participant: RUN3D LIMITED

Abstract

An estimated 83% of musculoskeletal injuries are sports activity related (Wikipedia).
Over 4M amateur sportspeople per year in the UK suffer recurrent physical injuries of this
kind, usually caused by poor running style or posture or by over ambitious training. Not only
does this undo personal training plans and undermine the health benefits and goals that many
aspire to but it also costs the UK economy an estimated £60.9M per year in lost productivity.
Run3D Limited, a biomechanical engineering company specialising in 3D motion analysis, is
developing a novel real time analysis and retraining system for assessing and preventing
reoccurrence of musculoskeletal overuse injuries.
Focussing first on treatment of injuries related to walking and running in athletics sports and
in professions where high physical performance is required e.g. the army, it has already
proved the concept of using 3D gait assessment in the sports clinic, established demand from
clinicians and demonstrated the outcomes and benefits to patients.
However current technology, which is an off line analysis, is limiting its usefulness and its
patients would like real time retraining as an integral part of their sports training.
The 18 months long project, which will develop a prototype 3D Gait Retraining system for
specialist clinic use initially, will implement a step change in 3D gait technology, bringing a
user friendly real time system to clinics and their patients for the first time.
Including components for clinical specialists and for end user or patient, it will comprise
clinical gait analysis tailored to the specific sport, real time reporting and retraining of posture
and style to minimise the risk of repeating injuries using Run3D’s own motion analysis. It will
have a web based interface and a SMART app for end users to monitor their own progress and
recovery by comparing performance to an ideal and in real time.
