Pea-Pod Biorefinery

Lead Participant: LINK2ENERGY LIMITED

Abstract

This study funded by The Technology Strategy Board through the Innovation Vouvher scheme will develop the a novel Pea Pod Biorefinery process which fulfill the essential criteria for considering a food supply chain residue biorefinery – large volumes already available and with known food/chemical/fuel/material value. It is known that pea pods contain chemicals of interest to both the food , chemical and pharamceutical industries. Pea starches have successfully been used to make bioplastics. Link2Energy Ltd continues to expand its expertise in biorefinery technology and will extend initial feasiblity studies on the use of green extraction technologies by carrying out pilot plant scale trials at the new and prestigous Biorefinery Development Centre (BDC) at the University of York to obtain valuable extracts. The widespread growing of peas in numerous regions of the world including Europe, North and South America, the Middle East and Asia, means that a successful biorefinery model including the appropriate technologies could be exported overseas. The study is also aimed at establishing a long term relationship between the Link2Energy Ltd and the BDC.
