A method to improve the breakdown of sewage solids by use of ultrasound

Lead Participant: JOHN CAZA LTD

Abstract

Human waste sewage is broken down by bacteria in sewage processing plants. The larger the solid matter, the slower the process of digestion. Sewage processing consumes a large amount of energy (up to 10% of all energy produced), and a significant proportion of this is used in breakdown of waste solids. Our idea is to use ultrasound to aid the process, reducing the average size of solid material substantially, while also reducing the overall amount of energy used. Other benefits may include potential for increased biogas generation; improved settlement and improved de-watering of residual biowaste.
