6507 - TP5700 QR Code Reader Development (For Bus Passengers)

VIX Technology is a leading global supplier of integrated transport solutions. We provide both automated fare collection and real time passenger information systems to public transport operators and government agencies. In the UK VIX has provided fare collection systems to many bus and rail organisations with some 25% of all UK buses using our electronic ticket machines to manage cash and electronic smartcard based fares. VIX is a founding member of ITSO, which is the crown copyright standard used to administer the concessionary bus travel schemes in the UK and we have worked extensively with public transport operators in the UK to enable commercial smartcard ticketing based on the ITSO standard.
VIX is looking to further develop payment channels available to passengers on buses. The ticket machines we currently support allow cash payments and electronic smartcard payments with trials undertaken to explore contactless EMV and NFC based mobile phone transactions. Research has indicated that passengers are diverse and wish to have access to multiple payment methods and we are looking to add a further payment channel to the ticket machines in the field in the form or QR Code based ticketing.
VIX will work with Go Aheads 'Go North East' operating company to develop their existing Key Mobile Solution (www.simplygo.com/thekeymobile) further. The existing solution allows passengers to access bus travel information and buy electronic tickets on their smartphones in the North East of England. Currently passengers who have bought a QR Code ticket will simply show the electronic ticket to the driver which means that the solution has the potential to be subject to fraud as the validity of the electronic ticket cannot be electronically ascertained. VIX and Go Ahead will work together develop a QR Code reading function to allow their existing fleet of TP5700 ticket machines to scan electronic tickets. This will allow the presentation of ticket details to the driver (via the ticket machine screen) which will allow him to validate the ticket and enable the passenger to undertake the journey
