Liquid city: Water, landscape and social formation in twenty-first century Mumbai

Lead Research Organisation: University College London
Department Name: Geography

Abstract

The project has four principal research themes:

i) An exploration of the role of water in the creation of urban landscapes in Mumbai
ranging from the domestic interior to extensive technological landscapes associated
with water supply.

ii) An analysis of the factors operating through both the colonial and post-colonial era
that have contributed towards the development of sharply differentiated cultures of
water consumption and the role of water in delineating class, ethnic and caste based
social formations within the city.

iii) The use of water as both metaphor and analytical tool to explore the multiple
modernities that characterise contemporary Mumbai.

iv) The exploration of visual cultures of water through the production of a documentary film
that combines both ethnographic and iconographic analysis of everyday life in the
city.
