Unwrapping the Galloway Hoard

Abstract
The Galloway hoard is the richest, most varied and well-preserved collection of precious and exotic objects surviving from Viking-age Britain and Ireland. Buried around AD 900, it is both Scotland's earliest Viking-age silver bullion hoard and the largest collection of gold surviving from that period in Britain and Ireland. Beyond the silver, familiar from most Viking-age hoards, and the much rarer gold, is an unprecedented array of inorganic materials such as bronze, glass, and rock crystal, entangled with the outstandingly rare preservation of organic materials (wood, leather, wool, linen, and silk). For example: a gold-mounted rock-crystal jar, likely to originate from the Byzantine Empire or perhaps beyond in the Islamic caliphate, is wrapped in several layers of textile including Scotland's earliest examples of silk; both this exotic fabric and the crystal jar could have travelled thousands of miles to reach Scotland.
Most hoards are usually interpreted as buried wealth, with the focus on events surrounding the moment of burial. The Galloway hoard challenges this view, and presents a rare opportunity to ask in much more detail about: how, and why, people assembled and collected hoards during the Viking Age? Four distinct caches within the Galloway hoard, exceptionally preserved with associated textiles, leather wrappings and a wooden box, take us beyond the usual perspective of hoards as a single mass of objects. Through a range of digital imaging techniques, scientific analysis and radiocarbon dating we will piece together clues from the history (biographies) of objects in order to examine the process of assembling the different parts of this spectacularly rich collection in the years (and perhaps even centuries) before its final burial.
This project brings together expertise in hoards and hoarding at National Museums Scotland and archaeological textiles and leather at University of Glasgow. Three Postdoctoral Research Assistants will tackle different aspects of the hoard: the silver which forms the bulk of the contents; the gold, glass, rock crystal and other inorganic materials; and the 250 detached fragments of organic material (mostly textiles). The latter will be identified, analysed and mapped back within the four caches, especially the wrapped lidded vessel containing complex bundles. Once recorded and studied these organic fragments will then form the basis for a fine-grained radiocarbon dating programme by Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre (SUERC). Integrating this with all the other project findings will produce rare insights into the biographies of the many objects and the accumulation of this hoard before its final deposition. We will be collaborating with a range of specialist institutions. The breadth and depth of the contextual setting of the Galloway hoard stretching from Britain to the Byzantine Empire, and perhaps beyond, will attract international specialists to five workshops:1) Wrapping and Reliquaries; 2)Silk and International Connections; 3) Late Anglo-Saxon Metalwork; 4) Viking-age Gold; 5) Mixed Materials, Exotica, Curios and Heirlooms.
Originating from distant lands, accumulated over many years, and containing sacred and secular items, the objects, bundles and composition of the Galloway hoard has currently unrealised potential to challenge our understanding of what constitutes a hoard in Early Medieval Europe and beyond. The significance of the Galloway hoard extends beyond the Viking Age, not just because of its international context, but because of its exceptional preservation. This significance will be assessed in a final symposium focusing on new approaches to assembling and collecting hoards. Key outputs will include two books from the workshops and symposium, targeted journal articles, an exhibition in four venues around Scotland accompanied by public and schools programmes, rich digital media activity and dedicated pages on National Museums Scotland's website.

Planned Impact
In 2017, the PI (Goldberg) spearheaded a fundraising campaign for £1.98 million to acquire the Galloway hoard for the nation, in accordance with the Treasure Trove process. The National Museums Scotland (NMS) campaign was generously supported by the National Heritage Memorial Fund (£1million), the Art Fund (£400,000) and the Scottish Government (£150,000), but it was hundreds of individual donations that made up the total. Central to the campaign was an exhibition in NMS, visited by thousands of people, with the PI giving daily tours for 6 months. Social media reached over 750,000 people with 471,128 viewing 17 Facebook posts, 51,948 page views to all Hoard web-pages with five videos (including two live broadcasts) achieving 100,050 views. People responded to the call that: "With your support, the precious items in the Hoard - some of which have never before been found in Britain - can speak to us across the centuries and teach us things we've never imagined about our ancestors, history and heritage" (Galloway Hoard Appeal, NMS). It is now the sincere intention of this project to fulfil that promise.
Having garnered local, national and international support amongst the general public and academic communities for the research potential of the hoard, this project will maintain this enthusiasm by extending the available data and presenting it to the public through a touring exhibition, presentations, schools engagement and digital media.
An "Unwrapping the Galloway Hoard" exhibition will originate in Edinburgh and then tour to Kirkcudbright, responding to demand from local communities close to where the hoard was discovered, and also to Aberdeen and Dundee. The digital content of the exhibition will be updated for each venue based on the on-going research and supported by public lectures from the project team, and school activities. These museums and galleries, and the communities they serve will reap the benefits of international standard research in material culture studies. A public programme of talks and tours, (in real-time, videoed and archived on-line) will spotlight the on-going AHRC research for visitors to NMS and the touring venues, as well as people around the UK who cannot come to see the hoard itself on display.
The "Unwrapping the Galloway Hoard" project will also have an impact beyond these shores to an even greater range of people around the world who are fascinated with the Viking Age. As well as people from across the UK and Ireland, the exhibition at NMS will attract a high proportion of international visitors, especially during the Edinburgh Festival. However, digital outputs, the on-line presence of this project, and the variety of dissemination channels will extend the reach of this research further to international audiences. An annual update of the project will be presented to the public at NMS as part of Scottish Archaeology Month.
The long-term legacy of this AHRC research will be in the displays of Galloway hoard material at Kirkcudbright Art Gallery, the closest appropriate venue to where the hoard was discovered, and in the next decade the Galloway hoard will become a centre-piece of the transformation of the new permanent galleries in the National Museum of Scotland.
"Unwrapping the Galloway Hoard" will generate new information about hoards, why people assembled such collections and how these can contribute to our understanding of the past in surprising ways. This National Museums Scotland partnership with the University of Glasgow puts this project in a unique position to create and communicate this knowledge to both non-academic and expert audiences. Our research on this collection of mixed cultural origin, accumulated over generations, and travelling great distances has the potential to reveal new insights about the world during the Viking Age and the development of national histories and identities at a crucial point during the 10th century AD.

| Description | The Galloway hoard has indeed proved to be unique among Viking-age hoards in Britain and Ireland with the 'Unwrapping' project revealing several surprising research outcomes evaluated here in light of the original objectives. Objective 1. To question the process and purpose of assembling and collecting a hoard. The most common explanation for historical or Viking-age hoards is that they were buried wealth hidden in times of stress and never recovered, as opposed to treasuries and archives that communities and successful lineages have managed to protect. This hoard demonstrates that what are often considered as competing theories can be materialised in the different parcels of the same deposit: the vessel looks like the treasury of a lineage accumulated over several centuries, representing generational wealth, whereas the silver bullion parcels are the currency of the day, representing the more fleeting riches of the Viking Age. Experts on hoards of different time-periods and places have participated in an "Assembling Hoards" academic symposium at National Museums Scotland [NMS] and across several sessions in the annual meetings of the European Association of Archaeologists. The results of these sessions will be published in a Brepols edited volume "The Archaeology of Hoards: Assembling, Mixed Materials and Fragmentation". Objective 2. To achieve a comprehensive understanding of every object in the hoard. The project team have created a full descriptive and visual catalogue of the hoard using macro- and microscopic analysis, digital imaging techniques, materials analysis, x-radiography, photogrammetry and CT scanning. A detailed written and visual archive including two- and three-dimensional digital graphics has fed into the publicly accessible catalogue of the hoard at NMS and dedicated web-pages focusing on key aspects of the Hoard. Objective 3. To understand the composition, geographical origin, age and accumulation processes of the full range of materials contained within the hoard. Through a range of scientific analyses at NMS, University of Glasgow and collaborations with external laboratories in London, Amsterdam and Brussels, the project team have produced several surprising outcomes for the origin and age of the material in the hoard. We have been able to supply a key case study for the ERC-funded project "Silver and the earliest Viking Age" at the University of Oxford, to our mutual benefit. Combining their techniques with our own expertise proved crucial in analysing and sourcing the silver bullion in the hoard but also revealing the unexpected origin of the Galloway Hoard vessel. Rather than being a vessel of European origin like other Viking-age hoard containers, the Galloway Hoard vessel has proved to be of Western Asian, likely Sasanian origin, with the niello inlay having the lead isotope signature of a silver mine in modern-day Iran. This is far out of the normal distribution range for a vessel like this, hundreds of miles further travelled than would be expected for the time. A group of heirloom objects were hundreds of years old when wrapped and carefully packed inside the Sasanian vessel. Several glass beads and a rock crystal sphere would more commonly be found in Frankish/Merovingian graves of the sixth and early seventh century AD. The gold and rock crystal jar has proven to have had a particularly long journey through time and space. It was made from a crystal column fragment which only has parallels in early Christian objects in the Vatican, and was probably a 600 year-old Imperial Roman relic before being transformed into a gold covered jar during the ninth century AD. The addition of the name of an Anglo-Saxon Bishop Hyguald executed in gold filigree on the base, links it explicitly to the power of the early Church even a century after the first Viking raids on Northumbrian monasteries. Collaborating with external specialists and with partner organisations, scientific analysis and a radiocarbon dating programme have made it possible to construct a detailed model of the accumulation of the hoard over time. Objective 4. To evaluate the significance of all objects within the Galloway hoard in terms of their regional, national and international context. The PDRAs have conducted wide-ranging research on hoards, as well as a broader comparison with other assemblages from the 8th to 10th century AD that contain similar ranges of organic and inorganic materials, in both the British Isles and Europe, and for some of those materials (silk and silver) our research has stretched into Asia. Contributions from highly qualified experts from around the world were welcomed at five workshops that focused on different aspects of the assemblage, with the addition of an historical-focused (online) workshop to tackle the unexpected inscription on the base of the gold and rock crystal jar. Some of the workshops were offered as online events with live Q&A sessions, widening public participation. These are archived on the NMS website here and Youtube. Specialist contributions from the workshops will be published together with project team results (Obj.1-4) in a fully illustrated Society of Antiquaries of Scotland monograph "Unwrapping the Galloway Hoard". Objective 5. To promote understanding of the on-going research for the wider public. This is where the project has exceeded expectations. A touring exhibition "Galloway Hoard: Viking Age Treasure" (originating at the National Museum of Scotland in 2021 and funded by the Scottish Government), was updated by the 'Unwrapping' project team as it toured Scotland, to Kirkcudbright Museum and Art Gallery (September 2021-June 2022) and Aberdeen City Art Gallery (July-October 2022). Updates were delivered through an AHRC-branded audiovisual unit that featured digital models, microscopy, interpretation and videos featuring a range of specialists discussing AHRC project outcomes and supported by regular public programming activities. A lecture series for Kirkcudbright featuring every member of the project team is now archived on Youtube and a 2024 TV documentary for the History Hit channel (released free to view on Youtube here) has received nearly a million views in 5 months. All of these outputs are linked on the NMS dedicated project website. The participation of our in-house communications and digital media teams have helped us get these results out to new audiences. Our research has driven press statements to the media which have led to global coverage, with over 300 articles reaching an estimated audience of over 800 million. One of our key research findings, the central Asian origin of the silver lidded vessel, was incorporated in the major exhibition "Silk Roads" at the British Museum (September 2024-February 2025), and its attendant publication. Perhaps most unexpected has been the development of an international touring exhibition "Treasures of the Viking Age: the Galloway Hoard" which will tour from 2025 to at least 2028, delivering the AHRC 'Unwrapping' project results to new and distant audiences around the world. |
| Exploitation Route | The Galloway Hoard will continue to be the subject of research for years to come, and this project has provided the foundations for that work to continue. The purpose of all this dissemination activity is to make the projects findings available to as wide an audience as possible, especially through the publication of the monograph (Objective 4). |

| Description | A major focus of the 'Unwrapping' project has been the complex organic and inorganic bundles within the wrapped lidded vessel at the heart of the Galloway hoard. Two unique or new artefact types, never recognised before in Britain and Ireland, have been revealed within the complex textile bundles. Three inter-related golden jewels that have previously been considered singly as aestels (manuscript pointers eg the Alfred jewel), now need to be completely reconsidered as a new artefact type, part of a composite dress accessory, perhaps a cinch or a girdle, as demonstrated by the contextual information of the bundle and being physically connected by silk braid. But most surprising, from within a silk-lined leather pouch a gold-mounted rock crystal jar has been revealed which, when our project proposal was put together in 2019 was expected to have been from the Islamic Caliphate. Instead our research has shown it to be a relic of ancient Rome, at least 500 years old by the time it was repurposed and mounted with gold to convert it into a jar by a previously unknown 9th century Northumbrian Bishop's whose name - Hyguald - is executed in gold filigree on the base. This necessitated adding a historical workshop to our programme of materially focussed workshops planned for every six months of the project. The 'Bishop Hyguald' historical workshop addition was time-critical in the first 6 months because it was to be our first digital update to a touring exhibition (funded by the Scottish Government) on the Galloway Hoard. As artefacts were revealed the 'Unwrapping' project planned to disseminate the latest AHRC research results through a synergy with this touring exhibition in three locations - Kirkcudbright, Aberdeen and Dundee. Due to the disruption caused by Covid-19 in the period between project proposal (2019) and project beginning (June 2021) this touring exhibition had to be delayed by a full calendar year. Updates were successfully added in Kirkcudbright Museum and Art gallery in December 2021 (rock crystal update) and Aberdeen City Art gallery in July 2022 (silk braid and 'aestel' update), but due to Covid-19 we lost the opportunity for our third venue in Dundee. The exhibition has proved a great success with the project team delivering a wide range of dissemination and educational activities as planned, and visitor numbers were calculated as 150,000. 2025 update: the 'Unwrapping' research has continued to have public impact through the final reveal, unwrapping of the vessel at the heart of the hoard, and the inclusion of this object as one of the highlights in the 'Silk Roads' exhibition at the British Museum (September 2024-February 2025). This first display of this object coincided with the research reveal that the vessel had been identified by our project as Western Asian/Sasanian in origin. The research partnership with the University of Oxford's 'Silver and the Earliest Viking Age' had used lead isotope analysis to prove that the vessel was not like silver in other Viking Age hoards and a sample of the niello (silver sulphide) inlay confirmed an origin from Nakhluk, a mine in modern-day Iran. This gained international media attention and was subsequently seen by over 100,000 visitors in the 'Silk Roads' exhibition. An international touring exhibition 'Treasures of the Viking Age: the Galloway Hoard' was created during 2024 and features findings from the 'Unwrapping' project. The first leg of the tour opened at South Australia Museum, Adelaide on February 8th 2025. It will bring the 'Unwrapping' research to many new international audiences in continents across the globe. The press release for the tour was accompanied by a final research story from the 'Unwrapping' project where we had deciphered the final runic inscription, which reads "This is the communities wealth". This was accompanied by a statement of support from AHRC Executive Chair Prof Chris Smith. The story reached the highest corridors of power and the research was referenced in the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer's speech to the Scottish Labour Party conference in Glasgow on Sunday 23rd February 2025. |

| PI Contribution | The Galloway Hoard project has provided samples of every silver object in the hoard for trace element and lead isotope analysis. NMS staff have either acted as couriers for in-situ analysis at the University of Edinburgh Geo-sciences facility or Dr Mary Davis the Galloway Hoard conservator has taken samples to be analysed remotely. NMS project team, the PI and the post-docs, will collaborate in the interpretation of the resulting data, incorporating it into the Galloway Hoard project and into the results of the ERC project. |
| Collaborator Contribution | The 5-year project, Silver and the Origins of the Viking Age addresses one of the enduring questions of medieval studies - the origins of the Viking Age (c. 750-1050 AD) - through an interdisciplinary (archaeological, archaeometric and numismatic) study of Viking-age silver from Britain, Ireland, continental Europe and Asia. It aims to provide the first large-scale, systematic and empirically-based answers to the outstanding questions of where, when and why the Viking Age began. The Galloway Hoard, as Scotland's earliest Viking-age hoard has been chosen as one of the samples for this wide-ranging study. |

| Results and Impact | An example of the organic international coverage arising from the press statement (7 Feb 2025, see previous entry) announcing the new reading of the long runic inscription of the Galloway Hoard. This American magazine article from 10 Feb 2025 quotes the original press release, quotes from Project lead Martin Goldberg to The Guardian, and Galloway Hoard Researcher Adrian Maldonado and collaborator David Parsons' co-written Discover article produced in support for the NMS website (https://www.nms.ac.uk/discover-catalogue/a-runic-revelation-who-owned-the-galloway-hoard), showing the impact that our coordinated media and dissemination strategy is having the desired impact of changing the conversation on the social significance of 'Viking treasure' beyond its value in precious metal. |

| Results and Impact | Press release announcing the decoding of the enigmatic long runic inscription from a silver arm-ring in the Galloway Hoard, as well as the start of the touring exhibition's first venue at the South Australian Museum, Adelaide. The story was offered as an exclusive to The Observer (https://www.theguardian.com/science/2025/feb/07/mystery-behind-viking-age-treasure-find-in-scotland-may-finally-have-been-solved, 7 February 2025), and then spread globally from there. The press statement was also supported by the AHRC executive chair Christopher Smith, who provided a quote. The press statement was backed by a new 'Discover article' on the NMS website explaining the meaning of the runic inscriptions from the hoard co-written by Galloway Hoard Researcher Adrian Maldonado with external colleague Dr David Parsons of the University of Wales (https://www.nms.ac.uk/discover-catalogue/a-runic-revelation-who-owned-the-galloway-hoard), and a new addition to the social media campaign begun in September 2024, a short reel with new footage which performed particularly highly on Instagram. Later organic media coverage made use of both the original press statement and the NMS Discover article (see next entry). The new reading, 'this is the community's wealth' was particularly resonant, and was even quoted by Prime Minister Keir Starmer in a speech to the Scottish Labour Conference (https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/starmer-looks-to-vikings-for-inspiration-as-gives-his-speech-at-scottish-labour-conference). |

| Results and Impact | The EAA is one of Europe's largest annual archaeological conferences with over 2500 delegates. Contribution ID: 3610 Contribution title: Global connections and local manifestations in the Galloway Hoard Accepted into session #524. Medieval Glocalisation: Local Manifestations of Global Connections Abstract: The Galloway Hoard (discovered in 2014) juxtaposes the silver bullion familiar from many other Viking Age hoards with a surprising array of other materials and objects not normally found in such hoards - gold, rock crystal, minerals, glass, Anglo-Saxon jewellery, as well as the rare organic preservation of silk, linen, wool, leather and wood. As the research and conservation programme continues many of these objects and materials are proving to have exotic origins and connections stretching halfway around the world. Part of the collection contained separately in a wrapped and lidded vessel features heirlooms accumulated over generations, some of which pre-date the Viking Age. Even the silver bullion has an unusual local element to it with Anglo-Saxon runic characters carved into Hiberno-Scandinavian broad-band silver arm-rings. The multiple identities, and the temporal and geographic range represented by this collection present an unusually rich example of global connections, albeit with numerous idiosyncrasies. |
