Overcoming sonic stalemates: representing cultural diversity in sample packs

Lead Research Organisation: Keele University
Department Name: Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences

Abstract

The principal subject of the research: This engagement fellowship takes the completed Instruments INDIA sound archive (established 2013), with its five hours of sound recordings of 28 Indian musical instruments as a central resource to engage others with diversity in sample pack creation and distribution. Working in partnership with Milap (the UK's leading Indian Arts Development Trust) and leading sample pack developers/distributors (Loopmasters, Symphonic and Ableton), sample packs will be created and distributed together with new guidance on sample pack content, labelling and representation. By creating sample packs curated from this archive of sound material for use amongst the wider sample-based music community, recordings of Indian musical instruments will be accessed and applied in new creative works not limited to the scope of single genres, styles or functions. Sample packs have a history of placing 'world music' labels onto their non-Western sound offerings and many conform to stereotyped notions of what is regarded as Indian music. In addressing these outdated, incorrect and often prejudiced perceptions, conversations can take place between musicians, creators, sample pack distributors, educators and academics to consider sound's role in reflecting, appreciating and celebrating cultures.
Key aims: Widening access to such sample packs will increase uptake of materials within sample-based music of differing genres from broader user demographics (including BAME), benefiting musicians, creators and producers in the creative industries. Packaging Instruments INDIA into accessible sample packs takes steps to dismantle stereotypes still prevalent in this sector and deepens understanding of diversity. Foregrounding contributing musicians within the process of sample creation provides an opportunity to make visible the authors of these unique sounds, enabling their voices to be heard in the digital landscape of sample downloads. More ambitiously, the circulation of such sounds is a move towards building acceptance and tolerance of difference through sound and its application.
A case for role modelling via diverse sample pack availability is made here together with aspirational mirroring (where users are able to see and hear aspects of their culture in operation within all walks of society, including sample distribution services). Access to high quality audio samples across leading sample pack distribution platforms will promote resources from underrepresented or overlooked groups of our creative industry. Sharing technical know-how to promote oneself through online platforms provides a CPD element within and beyond Milap's networks.
Where and how the research would be undertaken: Keele University as the host institution will be the base for project work to be undertaken. A series of online engagement activities will be conducted as a means of creating an archive of these events:
- An engagement panel discussing sample pack creation, diversity and representation in the respective fields of sample pack distributors, creators, musicians and music bodies.
- Training sessions for Music and Music Technology educators on sample pack use within teaching situations encouraging consideration for diversity and representation.
- Reconnection opportunities informing sample packs users with the musicians who created these sounds.
- Published open access guidance regarding good practice for sample packs creation.
Who else would be involved: The project continues its partnership with Milap and builds on connections with online sample pack distributors (Ableton, Symphonic and Loopmasters). Links with music bodies (MusicHE and Sound and Music) will be continued to convene events and promote new creative opportunities. A PGRA and audio technician will undertake sample pack curatorial work and engagement activities, and will both play a pivotal role in promoting the availability of these new resources.

Description The Fellowship has resulted in a commercial product, the Instruments INDIA sample pack (300 audio samples comprised of one-shots and loops) which will soon be distributed/sold by Loopmasters who have a global reach of music producers and endusers. In creating this sample pack the research team have observed and documented the issues regarding cultural sound representation on digital platforms. We have challenged how cultural sound materials are profiled and how musicians from Indian classical music traditiions are discussed and described. Our attention has been placed on changing the representation of diversity on sample pack distributor sites and seeking equitable ways of musicians entering this sector.
Musicians involved in the process have voiced their needs, concerns and ideas for sample pack development and this co-creation has resulted in a collaborative product that has already begun inspiring young creators internationally. Guidance about good practice for cultural sound distribution is currently being finalised so that our learning can be shared with the wider music production community and distribution platforms.
Our work has discovered that there are major systemic barriers from progressing with larger changes in the field, for example, search criteria, music labeling, and music information retrieval systems prevent the departure from terms such as 'world music' or 'ethnic' since they are still very much operational.
We have however witnessed an appetite to bring in more accuracy to represent cultural sound more authentically and the need/uptake of such sound material is on the increase.
Exploitation Route The sample pack is officially launched (March 2022). This is available for purchase/download internationally. We will be able to track the no. of downloads and engage with endusers on the use and perspectives of such provision. We hope to follow/track the use of the good practice guidance and repeat the Young Creators competition as a annual feature with Milap's schedule of events due to the success of this engagement event.

Description The experiences of undertaking an AHRC EDI Engagement Fellowship (as a pilot award scheme), have been documented in a further AHRC funded project and report document. I have gone onto collate experiences from the 10 EDI Fellows which are used to highlight any changes needed for the next iteration of EDI Fellowship funding. The findings from this EDI Engagement Fellowship focused on cultural sound representation have been documented as a guidance document on good practice (still work-in-progress). We hope to circulate and track this to sample pack distributors to see changes in the way such sound material is handled on online platforms. The musicians featuring in the sample pack are accessing royalties for the sale of the commercial sample pack created as part of the funding.

PI Contribution As part of the research project Milapfest and I as PI created the Instruments INDIA online educational website (http://www.milapfest.com/instruments-india/) together. This activity involved recording approximately 28 musicians of Indian classical music, using Milapfest contacts of high quality performers and building a freely accessible resource to accompany these sound materials so that the general public could hear, see and learn about this genre of music. As PI, I met with each musician and recording the sound material. I was also responsible for editing and curating material for the website.
Collaborator Contribution Milapfest organised all musicians visiting Liverpool and arrange a field trip to India for further sound collection. Context, photos and videos were all coordinated by Milapfest. Milapfest provided opportunities for networking, meetings and introductions to musicians and data collection. They provided publicity opportunities, event promotion schemes and website space for communication of research updates and findings.

Results and Impact A collection of three videos were made documenting the process of creating a sample pack from a sound recording archive. The steps involved were broken down into manageable chunks to allow the contributing musicians to see how their sound materials were being used and manipulated/altered to create usable loops and one-shots (for use within music production). These video resources form part of the larger Instruments INDIA resource to demystify the process of sample pack creation.

Results and Impact The podcast (https://soundcloud.com/instrumentsinda/instruments-india-young-creators-competition-podcast) announced the winners of the Instruments INDIA Young Creators Competition. The Jury for the competitiion provided a commentary on the winners and we invited the winners to share a statement about their creative practice and the benefit of accessing the Instruments INDIA samples for music production activity. The podcast provided one way to join up producers with musicians who created the sound materials in the first instance. The podcast also acted as a discussion of what contemporary music production engages with and how samples are the building blocks for many creators. This dissemination outlet reach Milap's (UKs leading Indian Arts Development Trust) audiences, music production enthusiasts, musicians involved in project and the wider academic community in music production fields.
