Re-imagining Collection Care Research at Tate

Lead Research Organisation: Tate
Department Name: Conservation

Abstract

Our application to the AHRC Capability for Collections Fund is focused on the urgent replacement/upgrading of ageing digital and portable equipment to help ensure continued research within the Collection Care division. The equipment is located across our Conservation Science, Conservation and Photography studios at Tate Britain. These tools are vital for business continuity in support of physical and digital access to collections, digital engagement, research development and leadership and the effective technical examination, documentation, conservation, and preservation of Tate's collection. This work directly contributes to new knowledge and engagement through deep exploration of both the digital and physical collection. As a GLAM sector institution, Tate faces a sustained lack of resource for capital investment; maintenance of our estate for public access is a constant priority, impacting on other demands. As a result, much of the equipment underpinning Tate's technical research output and capacity has reached or is approaching end-of life and is now redundant or functioning below par. This award would increase our capacity and capability to develop new research questions arising from Tate's unique collections, to sustain existing and form new research collaborations, and to continue to be ambitious and impactful in our practice and policy, nationally and internationally.

Collection Care research has been a major contributor to Tate Research, championing and nurturing our vibrant research culture and securing our success as an Independent Research Organisation. The division has a long history of conducting important research in contemporary art materials and conservation, art transport, historic British paintings, digital art and preventive conservation. Much of this output has been made possible through the equipment available on-site, alongside fruitful collaborations, projects and exchange with local, national and international partners. Most recently Collection Care Research has secured awards from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation for the Reshaping the Collectible project (2018-2021), from the European Framework Programme to participate in ground-breaking scientific, practice-based projects such as Nanorestart (2015-2018), and from the AHRC for projects such as Cleaning Modern Oil Paints (2015-2018) and (to date) six AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership (CDP) awards. We share our work with broad audiences, through many publications per year, regular presentations, practitioner professional development workshops and effective digital engagement. Digital outputs such as Restoring Rothko and Conserving Whaam!, remain among Tate's most popular on-line films and the most-watched by 18-34-year olds, receiving 480,000 and 133,000 viewings respectively.

At the core of Tate and Collection Care's Research Strategy is the imperative that research impacts our practice and contributes valuable outcomes to the wider heritage sector. Collection Care research recognises the value of different forms of knowledge, having developed inherently collaborative and interdisciplinary research methods that draw on the expertise of scientific, technical, arts and humanities disciplines, nationally and internationally. We work closely with practitioners to translate research into innovations in how we care for Tate's collections, sharing these outcomes as broadly as possible. It is essential that our technical equipment is upgraded to enhance our capability for future research and innovation, so that we can play a full part in a UK-wide distributed, impactful and forward-looking heritage research network and the UK Governments World Class Labs initiative. This award would be a significant step towards our long-term goal of developing a state-of-the-art Collections Centre to support knowledge exchange and act as a nexus for inter-disciplinary and creative research, contributing fully to the UK economy and the wellbeing of all.

Description This infrastructure award has resulted in the renewal of portable imaging, analytical and digital equipment across the Collection Care division at Tate. The key objective in 23-24 was to embed and further roll out the use of the equipment afforded by the grant to enhance skills, practice, research capability, partnerships, and outputs. All the equipment installed across Conservation and Photography is now in regular use in-house, training continues to be rolled out amongst Collection Care colleagues (paintings conservation, photography and frames conservation are key users) and the equipment continues to be used regularly by researchers including doctoral students, post-doctoral Fellows, and guest researchers such as colleagues from the Courtauld Institute of Art. The range and quality of equipment afforded by the grant has brought Tate on par with other cultural research institutions and is supporting both the enhancement and improvement of everyday practice and research. Documentation is also informing communication, research, and updates to Collection Care policy through enabling access to kit, enhancing staff skills, and prompting us to ask more diverse and specific research questions about the works in Tate's collection.

This award has also helped to influence the successful outcomes of two new awards (Horizon Europe funded GREENART (2022-2025) (UKRI (UK Research and Innovation) Horizon Europe funding guarantee grant number 10039224 as part of the Horizon Europe HORIZON-CL2-2021-HERITAGE-01 under grant agreement number 101060941) and an AHRC (Arts and Humanities Research Council) CDP (Collaborative Doctoral Partnership) with Imperial College, London (2023-2026).

Throughout 23-24, the CapCo award equipment has continued to: be assimilated into daily practice, better inform enquiries around works of art, underpin collaborative research funding bids, provide data and images for academic and non-academic outputs such as publications, talks, workshops, websites, and social media as well as Tate displays and exhibitions. This equipment is now substantially supporting Tate's priorities on uncovering diverse stories around works in our collection; achieving real change around who engages with Tate; sustainability; and how we use the collection more to meet the needs of the public.

To date around 200 artworks have been investigated using at least one piece of CapCo-funded portable analytical equipment and 300 works were imaged using new photographic and imaging equipment in 2023-24 alone. Most of the portable imaging and analytical equipment has been used (for example) to help support the first overall cleaning of Andy Warhol's 'Marilyn' triptych (Tate, T03093, 1962) which has facilitated a new understanding of the way this work was constructed, revived the painting surface, and informed its ongoing physical vulnerability. In depth user guides have been produced for several pieces of award equipment and training continues to be rolled out to conservation and photography colleagues to help support research capacity and autonomy within Collection Care.

The award(s) has also fine-tuned our thoughts towards data collection, organisation and storage, prompting Photography to invest in an iBase module to incorporate key Hirox microscope images into our image capture and retrieval system, Conservation Science participation in the Getty Conservation Institute ARCHES for Science initiative for heritage science data as a key case study, and the rolling out of established conservation science documentation processes to equipment users throughout Collection Care. Much of this has helped inform Tate's successful bids in 2023 to the RICHeS (Research Infrastructure for Conservation and Heritage Science) scheme.
Exploitation Route The use of this equipment and the resulting outputs have already become embedded in everyday practice and processes at Tate (see example of the Andy Warhol treatment), which will continue to filter through to colleagues as they see the benefits and become expert users. Conservation and wider Collection Care teams, interns and fellows across each conservation discipline have been and will continue to be trained to use equipment as part of their enhanced learning at Tate which will continue to enhance both individual and team research capacity and capability. Within 23-24 in-house user groups (pXRF, HIROX) continued, and the creation of sector user groups around the analysis of modern materials and optimal use of Hirox equipment are progressing. Several collaborative PhD students (AHRC CDP with Northumbria University, another AHRC CDP with Imperial College London, and a doctorate based at the University of Oslo) as well as a range of other post-graduate students and external conservation researchers have made extensive use of the new portable imaging and analytical equipment, resulting in enhanced methodologies, results and impact for their research which have been and will continue to be featured in academic publications and other dissemination formats to be used by professional heritage scientists and conservation professionals as well as students. Outputs from the use of the CapCo award equipment and facilities has immediately resulted in enhanced documentation within Tate's Conservation and artwork records which is now being used by colleagues as part of their core work, as well as contributing to social media outputs, the Tate website, exhibition catalogues and other online content. Conservation Science's involvement as a pilot case study for the ARCHES for Science initiative with the Getty Conservation Institute, helped us to prepare successful applications to distributed infrastructure initiatives such as RiCHeS (Research Infrastructure for Conservation and Heritage Science). Within 2023-24 our newest Conservation Science team members - an AHRC CDP student with Imperial College and our Horizon Europe/UKRI funded GREENART project post-doctoral fellow and project conservators have been trained and become expert users of much of the CapCo equipment. The Conservation Management team is working closely with the Tate social media team to identify opportunities for the featuring of the many outputs of the CapCo awards, which will continue to offer positive public connections with Collection Care roles, people, and practices, as well as research and artworks to Tate's diverse audiences.

Description This award has revolutionised the imaging and non-destructive analysis of artworks in Tate's collection bringing capabilities in-house that we previously had to apply for through lengthy external processes or not had access to at all. The collective and ongoing impact of this new investment in Tate's imaging, digital and analytical research infrastructure is increasing, enhancing both our interest and capacity for investigating the technical aspects of Tate's collection. We are enabling access and improved investigation of works in the collection, where the information produced is being used for social media, in-house public displays, further education, training, publications, policy, and preservation, and can better contribute to new stories and narratives about Tate's collection as well as the daily and connected work of the Collection Care division. The primary impacts have revolved around supporting Tate's programme through the imaging, analysis, and conservation of works of art. This has been achieved through embedding the equipment into work practices, training and developing skills for colleagues, approaching research questions with a renewed sense of rigour, providing better insight and solutions to some of our most intractable materials-based issues, and enhancing access to our digital collection. The outputs have thus far filtered through to conservation records in the form of new technical data and imaging servers which will be made available through initiatives such as RICHeS (Research Infrastructure for Conservation and Heritage Science). Images and technical information have been used to support exhibitions, featured in social media posts, academic publications, sustainability initiatives and collection care policies such as our Collection Care lighting policy. The equipment has been used by Tate colleagues, doctoral students, visiting researchers and student placements where the outcomes have informed and enhanced research quality and outputs, and the research questions beginning to arise from regular use are informing collaborative research funding bids as well as finessing and enhancing our investigative (practice-based) research into specific works of art. In 2024-25 alone, the Photography team imaged around 120 Tate works with one or more pieces of CapCo equipment and the science team has processed more than 60 requests from Conservation teams and external collaborators utilising CapCo equipment, including our suite of portable kit. Most notably, the portable microscopy and analytical equipment has been heavily utilised for the GREENART project (2022-2025) and the conservation of Andy Warhol's Marilyn Diptych. This award has enabled Tate to take our place amongst the UK national GLAM institutions as an active and impactful IRO, enabling aspirational approaches to research and practice, facilitating numerous publications, and presentations, as well as underpinning our funding bids, including our success in securing two RICHeS awards in 2024.

Organisation Courtauld Institute of Art (University of London)
Country United Kingdom
Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution Tate hosts and co-ordinates this Consortium and facilitates research between members and collaborators. Supported by Research Dept and Conservation Science (Ormsby and Lee).
Collaborator Contribution Twentieth- and twenty-first-century oil paintings and painted surfaces present a range of complex treatment challenges to conservators that are distinct from those noted from previous centuries. These include the formation of 'surface skins' of medium on painted surfaces, efflorescence, unpredictable water and solvent sensitivity and the recent phenomena where previously stable surfaces begin to drip. Modern oil paints are used by artists in the creation of paintings and sculpture and many of these surfaces are unvarnished and exposed directly to the environment. In response to the need for research in this area, Tate, the Courtauld Institute of Art, the Getty Conservation Institute, the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands and Hamilton Kerr Institute have come together and committed to work collaboratively to address these issues. These five organisations have signed a memorandum of understanding formalising this commitment to work together and to share knowledge about: Chemical and physical properties of modern oil paints and their behaviour over time; Development of treatments; Research relating to the use of these materials by artists; Production and take up of modern oil paints in the twentieth and twenty first centuries. The members of the consortium will meet regularly to exchange information on current research and will also seek opportunities to develop scholarly research, create opportunities for the exchange of staff and the sharing of equipment. They will also look for ways of communicating new developments via conferences, symposia and publications.

Results and Impact An extensive technical study of one of Hogarth's renowned series, A Rake's Progress, was undertaken by Paintings Conservation and Conservation Science (Townsend) in collaboration with curatorial and the Sir John Soane's Museum who loaned these paintings. As part of this research project a number of key works by Hogarth in the Tate collection, including a portrait of James Quinn (N01935), were examined and analysed using CapCo funded equipment and facilities. Together with existing technical studies on Hogarth's works at Tate, this research has added to a comprehensive and significant body of work looking into Hogarth's materials and techniques across his career, which will be an invaluable resource for scholars in the field. In the Exhibition Galleries the technical research project is showcased on interpretation panels next to the paintings with QR codes linking to two Research Features published on Tate's website which discuss in greater detail, the results of the technical study.
