Abstract
A transdisciplinary project bringing together international scholars in the fields of sociology, feminist geography, cultural and media studies, MAUSI Net aims to establish a national advocacy network which is ongoingly informed by international experiences in Sweden (Malmö) and India (Delhi). Through the use of co-creative epistemologies to stimulate dialogue, knowledge production and dissemination of cross-cultural experiences of women's post-reproductive age, MAUSI Net aims to use a multi-pronged approach capitalising on the strengths of the three contexts though a series of international workshops.
The first workshop will take place in Malmö, a small/medium size city in Sweden. Malmö is a known hub for artivism and as a city of cartoons (Seriestaden Malmö). A school for cartoonists was set up in 1999 and eventually led a group of women to start the feminist cartoonist collective Dotterbolaget (Daughter company) in 2005. In this context, comic strips became a form of activism aimed to support women in a male dominated sector. Malmö University's Department of Media, Art and Communication offers courses in visual communication and has experience of working with the municipality to display the work of local artists in public spaces. The workshop in Malmö will focus on awareness raising activities, through involvement of key civil society groups, the International Women's Organisation (IKF - Internationella kvinnoföreningen), and feminist cartoonists. The workshop will result in a menopause-themed comic strip/graphic novel that will be translated into English and Hindi and produce artivist interventions such as paper biodegradable stickers.
The second workshop will take place in Delhi. Delhi has established itself as a site for feminist activism on issues related to gendered violence, women's access to public space, gendered right to the city mainly through the work of NGOs using sustainable strategies to foster reproductive health amongst under-privileged women. One example is our partner organisation Goonj, which aims to build an equitable relationship of strength, sustenance, and dignity between cities and villages, using a range of fabrics as a tool to trigger development with dignity. One of their programmes is targeted at sustainable menstruation. The workshop in Delhi will engage Dalit women to speak about their experiences of post-reproductive age using storytelling-based approaches. The workshop in Delhi will malke use of selected material produced in Malmö to elicit the stories. This workshop will result in artivist material and other tools for raising awareness which will be discussed in the course of the workshop.
The work and artivism materials produced in Malmö and Delhi will converge in a major public facing event in London which will launch the MAUSI Net advocacy network. This event will see the participation of international speakers such as the Canadian cartoonist Sandra Bell Lundy, stakeholders such as the Menopause Charity, health practitioners and university-based menopause champions. The UK is at the vanguard of the "menopause in the workplace' movement where companies issue menopause policies and acquire the accreditation developed by Henpicked: Menopause in the Workplace, a British professional training firm. As Britain is currently leading the way in the field of menopause awareness, with this transdisciplinary network we aim to harness 'the menopausal turn' making sure cross-cultural awareness and trans-inclusion are embedded in dominant discourses and practices around the menopause. This network will lead to an international comparative research project on identity transition of women who are 50+.
Testimony to the genuine collaboration underpinning the proposed networking project, the research team had its first research workshop in Malmö, June 14-15th 2023, financed by Malmö University. Prior to this in person meeting, a series of zoom meetings had been held from October 2022 onward.

| Description | Women from local villages surronding Hapur, Uttarpradesh, India, participated in a body mapping storytelling workshop that lasted 2 days. As part of this workshop they made four real size body maps which were used as elicitation to share their experiences of the menopause. These maps will be part of the exhibition we are doing in London, University of Greenwich in Ocotber 2025. |
| Type Of Art | Artefact (including digital) |
| Year Produced | 2025 |
| Impact | Women for the first time discussed the menopause with each other in a safe space- using the body map as a starting point for these discussions. The body maps will be used during the exhibition in London to discuss inclusive and approaches to the menopause spanning to the Global South. |
| Title | Comic strip |
| Description | The comic strip was realised in the course of the workshop in Malmö by a professional cartoonist. In addition to this, several comic strips were completed by the research participants themselves. According to this project research aims, a selected number of images realised in the course of this workshop will be turned into stickers for the urban artivism approach we are developing |
| Type Of Art | Artefact (including digital) |
| Year Produced | 2025 |
| Impact | We are in the process of collecting quotes from the women and the organisation facilitating the workshop. orally, the women said it's the first time they had the opportunity to discuss their menopause experience in public and this, combined with receiving medical information during the workshop, changed their perception of the menopause. |

| Title | Stickers |
| Description | As part of our artivism approach, we are in the process of having stickers printed based on the comics strips realised in Malmö. One image will be taken from the participants' comic strips produced during the workshop, while another image for the stickers will be from the professional cartoonist's drawing. The biodegradable paper stickers will also have a QR code liked to the project's website, to raise awareness of the menopause in an includive manner beyong white middle-class women who are the moment are driving this public discourse. Stickers will be placed in public spaces in the three cities such as GP practices, and near transport hubs. |

| Description | Although we are not talking about findings per se, we believe the project is having non-academic impacts in the following ways: - Collaboration with major menopause stakeholder Henpiked CEO and founder Deborah Garlick who participated in our podcast and is interested in taking part in future iterations of this project During the workshop in Malmö in September 2024, we received oral feedback from the participants (who were women from the Middle-East) stating the following- these statements have been verified with the local organisations and co-facilitators on the day: -The women stated it was the first time they had the opportunity to discuss their experience of the menopause in public -They learnt from the medical information session during the workshop, and it helped them think about the menopause differently -Sharing their experiences of the menopause with other women-member of their community- in a safe space was beneficial to them as they realised they were not alone in experiencing physical and psychological effects of hormonal changes affecting their post-reproductive health - The women felt inspired by the activity of drawing During the workhops in Hapur, India (February 2025) the participants (informal workers undertaking low-paid jobs) provided the followoing oral feedback. These statements were checked by the organisation who helped with recruitment and the co-facilitators on the day: -The women stated it was the first time they had the opportunity to discuss their experience of the menopause in public -Some of the women never had the chance to reflect on the menopause before and especially on its implication on their working life -Sharing their experiences of the menopause with other women-member of their community in a safe space was beneficial to them as they realised they were not alone in experiencing physical and psychological effects of hormonal changes affecting their post-reproductive health -Showcasing their experiences, culture, religion, singing, dancing, building artefacts and communicating to women from a different country was an uplifting experience that helped them re-think their experience of the menopause and see it in a different light |

| Description | Training for PhD students at University of Delhi on Body Mapping and collecting oral testimony |
| Geographic Reach | Local/Municipal/Regional |
| Policy Influence Type | Influenced training of practitioners or researchers |
| Impact | Through the MAUSI Net project, our University of Delhi research assistants will have for the first time encountered and practiced Body Mapping as a research method which will inform their future metholodogical approaches and knowledge in their own research and scholarship. Body Mapping is a research method which is becoming increasingly widely adopted as a more creative and instructive means of accessing testimony from research subjects than more traditional methods, such as interviews or questionnaries. It is particularly apt here not only in relation to more richly understanding physical, social, cultural and psychological experiences of menopause, but in forming meaningful research relationships with research-subjects whose social exclusion means they are illiterate and thus effectively debarred from some more conventional research approaches - this training will have invaluably expanded the students' critical knowledge and experience of cutting edge research methodologies growing in their application across the arts and humanities. |

| Results and Impact | We have recorded this podcast but it is still in the process of being edited. In the course iof this podcast we discussed women who are experiencing the menopause at work- the UK is the first country to introduce policies at work to support women going though the menopause to prevent job losses. The podcast not only provided perspectives from women in Sweden and India, in addition to the UK, but it also provided a platform for colleagues at University of Greenwich to showcase their pionering work in establishing menopause workplace policies, but also engard Henpicked in relvant discussions on this impotant theme. |

| Results and Impact | In February 2025 in collaboration with our Indian partners (University of Delhi) we organised a workshop that made use of Body Mapping Storytelling to discuss how women from local villages experience the menopause. This 2 day workshop was facilitated by our contact in Harpur and a local organisation working on reproductive health. The women worked in groups around tables and used the body maps to represent themselves and their experiences. The tables were facilitated by local students who could translate in English. The workshop was the first one of this kind in Hapur and also the first international event in the colleage. The event made it local media in Hindi. Recruiting the Dalit women to do this work was the first step towards further work our colleague in Hapur will be doing with this group. The workshop was welcomed enthusiasitcally by all the women involved, the organisation and the management of the University. |

| Results and Impact | The workshop engaged 30 Middle Eastern women through a local organisation in a diverse area of Malmö, Sweden. Malmö is a small-medium size city in Sweden and is known as a hub for artivism with a focus on feminist cartooning 'teeming with comics and comic creators such as storytellers, cartoonists and publishers, ambassadors and educators' (BIDMalmö, nd). Over the course of a creative workshop held in September 2024 and aided by translators, participants from a local women's health group gathered with the project researchers and a local feminist cartoonist, Karolina Bång, to respond to several broad themes that might provide fruitful ways into sharing experiences of menopause. These centred on bodily changes & medicalisation; representations and the 'positives' of menopause; and emotions, relationships & work. Each of these themes intended to act as elicitations for the women's original cartoon art exploring menopause, and to be considered alongside additional themes arising inductively from these encounters. As part of this workshop, a scientific presentation on the menopause was organised by the local organisation. Following the event, participants reported it being the first time they had the opportunity to discuss the menopause openly. |
