Sustainable pollination services for UK crops

Abstract
Pollination is a key ecosystem service, vital to the maintenance both of wild plant communities and agricultural productivity. Insect pollination, mostly by bees, is necessary for production in 84% of all crops in the Europe and 75% of the crops that are used directly as human food worldwide. In 2005, the economic value of insect pollination per year amounted to approximately £120 billion globally and about £440 million in the UK. Crop pollination services depend on both domesticated and wild pollinator populations, and both may be affected by a range of recent and projected environmental changes, with unknown consequences. There has been growing concern in recent decades about the fate of both domesticated and wild pollinators, leading to special initiatives by the Convention for Biodiversity (International Initiative for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Pollinators) and a number of continental, national and regional programmes. Clearly, insect pollination is an important agricultural input. However, our current knowledge about the pollination requirements of crops, the pollination potential of different bees and other insects and the impact of landscape, land use and climate changes on pollination services is poor. This is holding up progress towards designing effective policies to conserve and manage pollination services. Therefore, we propose to: First determine which wild and managed pollinators contribute to pollination of insect-dependent crops (e.g. most fruit trees, berries, oilseed rape, field beans) and whether at present lack of wild pollinators limits agricultural production. Second, to use this information to predict crop pollination deficits at the landscape scale (using modelling approaches). Third, determine whether and how climate change will affect UK crop distributions and the need for pollination services towards 2050. Fourth, use the outcomes of the above to design and test ways to mitigate against crop pollination deficits (i.e. improve availability of managed pollinators, provide food or nest resources for wild pollinators). The outcomes of the project will provide important novel scientific insights that can be used to support UK farmer decisions on crop, landscape and pollinator management practices. It will also facilitate the UK's move towards more sustainable agriculture. To this end we will disseminate our results to the major stakeholders (farmers, beekeepers, land managers, conservation agencies), but even more crucially we will start the exchange of information between stakeholders and scientists to guarantee that our research produces information required by the UK agricultural community.
Technical Summary
Insect pollination, mostly by bees, benefits 84% of EU crops with total annual economic value of ~£120 billion globally and ~£440 million in the UK. Despite this importance, there is a severe lack of basic information on how diversity and abundance of pollinating insects contribute to seed/fruit yield and quality and how climate change will affect pollination service need and provision. This proposal aims to provide a scientific underpinning of the current state, future potential and main factors influencing the provision of UK crop pollination services. We propose to: (1) determine which wild and managed pollinators contribute to pollination of insect-dependent crops (e.g. most fruit trees, berries, oilseed rape, field beans) and whether at present lack of wild pollinators limits agricultural production [in four focal crops: apples, strawberries, field beans and oilseed rape] (2) use this information to predict crop pollination deficits at the landscape scale (using habitat suitability modelling). (3) determine whether and how climate change will affect UK crop distributions and the need for pollination services towards 2050 (using process-based and climate-envelope models). (4) use the outcomes of the above to design and test mitigation strategies against crop pollination deficits (i.e. improve availability of managed pollinators, provide food or nest resources for wild pollinators). The outcomes of the project will provide scientific support for crop pollinator management and support UK farmer decisions on cropping and pollinator management and facilitate the UK's move towards more sustainable agriculture.
Planned Impact
A wide range of end users will benefit from our research into sustainable crop pollination. These include food producers, government agencies, food retailers, the general public (as food consumers) and also non-governmental organizations. Our research aims to provide understanding and recommendations on how to ensure that pollination services for food production remain reliable under the continuing threat of further losses of UK pollinators resulting from changes in agricultural practices and climate. By identifying ways to provide sustainable pollination services we will contribute to food security, sustainable agricultural practices, maintenance of consumer choice for UK grown produce and ultimately to the nation's health and wealth. Specific beneficiaries include: Farmers and fruit growers. Given the strong evidence that managed and wild pollinators are in decline in the UK, the challenge is to ensure that the production of field and fruit crops which rely on insect pollination is not compromised. Our research will fill a current knowledge gap on the degree of dependency of UK crops on pollinators, and determine how shortfalls in pollination services can be overcome through better management practices. We will provide an evidence base allowing the supply of pollination services to be properly matched to producer requirements. We will communicate our findings through direct engagement with producer groups (e.g. National Union of Farmers (NFU), Horticultural Development Company, Home Grown Cereals Association) using workshops and by producing specialist materials in hard copy and on dedicated webpages. The project team has worked with NFU and farmers before to deliver best practice guidance which has been formalised in Environmental Stewardship options. We will utilise high profile events such as the 'Royal Agricultural Show' to directly engage this user group. Defra aims to secure a healthy environment for future generations to prosper and our research will contribute to an important component of this which is the adoption of more sustainable agricultural practices. Our findings will be developed in close collaboration with policy teams at Defra (facilitated by FERA) and NFU through secondment of project staff, employment of a professional policy brief writer and delivery of scientific evidence in a form identified by the policy developers themselves. We have previously provided scientific evidence for policy formulation for Defra, UK parliament and for the Convention on Biological Diversity. Food retailers and the general public: By helping producers safeguard their crops, under current and future threats of pollination shortfalls, we will help ensure that UK fruit varieties are maintained and readily available to retailers. This will make sure that UK produce is less likely to be replaced by imported equivalents, thereby supporting UK consumer choice for high quality local produce. We will develop booklets (hard copies and e-copies) aimed at both retailers and the general public to highlight the importance of sustainable pollination services for the availability of a wide range of UK produce. We will also produce a poster encapsulating the key message using a competition in a local art colleague (a very effective method used in previous projects) and participate in National Insect Week through a series of public lectures. We will also exploit wherever possible existing retailer networks for disseminating material. Conservation related organisations: We will engage our long-term partners, e.g. Natural England, Wildlife Trusts, Bee Wasp and Ant Recording Society, in our workshops and with specially targeted material demonstrating that many insects of conservation importance also contribute to the supply of economically important ecosystem services. This will help these groups strengthen the cases for conserving key pollinators. Again we will use existing networks of these organizations to reach stakeholders.

Pollination deficits in UK apple orchards
in Journal of Pollination Ecology
Description | A number of key findings have emerged from this project. 1. UK apple production suffers from potential pollination deficits, where maximum yield and quality of produce is not being achieved due to inadequate pollination in some varieties 2. Predicting crop pollination service levels can help identify where wild pollinators are lacking and managed pollinators are needed. We have shown that demand and supply of crop pollination can be affectively mapped enabling management for pollination services to be targeted. 3. Wild bees and other pollinators significantly contribute to crop pollination in the UK for example apple rely heavily on wild bees, field beans and strawberries are pollinated well by bumblebees and many different pollinators contribute to oilseed production.. 4. Climate change may push British orchards North while pollinators may lag behind. This means that pollination in the apple orchards of the future maybe insufficient unless appropriate management is taken. 5. Honeybee stocks are insufficient to fulfil pollination service demand in the UK and most of Europe, therefore support for wild pollinators and beekeepers is essential. 6. Neonicotinoid insecticides have a negative effect on the capacity of bumblebees to pollinate crops such as apples and this needs to be taken into consideration when making decisions about the use of agrochemicals. |
Exploitation Route | Finding from this project can and have been taken forward to: Produce best practices guides for industry. Produce policy documents to inform future policy on sustainable food production including informing Defra's National Pollinator Strategy, Natural England's new agri-environmental scheme and IPBES Thematic assessments. Description | Sixteen academic publications have been produced based on research as part of the Sustainable pollination services for UK crop project with a number of additional papers in production. Findings from the project have also been used to produce grower targeted materials including 'Best practice guides' for industry and material in a number of trade publications. Work from this project has also been used to engage the public and increase public awareness concerning crop pollination through involvement in more than 130 engagement activities. Research has also been used to inform policy through the production of 2 Policy and Practice Notes as well as directly informing England's National Pollinator Strategy (2014), Defra's Pollinator Expert Advisory Group and England's Agri-Environment Schemes. A significant contribution of research reported in the IPBES Thematic assessment of Pollinators, Pollination and Crop Production is as a direct result of the Sustainable Pollination Services for UK Crops Project. Findings from this project and connections made during the work have been used to underpin a number of new collaborations and partnerships including ongoing research projects with BBSRC Sparking Impacts, Waitrose on "Managing Ecosystem Services to Promote Economic Benefits and Food Security (PhD)" and "Enhancing pollination and pest regulation services by supplementing floral resources (PhD)", Sainsbury's on "Ecosystem services in sustainable agriculture: maximising productivity and environmental benefits (PhD)", Syngenta on "Novel crop rotations to enhance multiple ecosystem services underpinning production of winter wheat and oilseed rape (PhD)". A partnership developed with Avalon Produce and Worldwide Fruit Ltd, fruit marketing and agronomy organisations, have contributed directly to a successful BBSRC proposal on Sustainable Management of Orchard Pollination Service. Furthermore, research from this project underpinned the recent Defra funded National Pollinator and Pollination Monitoring Framework project completed in 2016. |

Title | Crop pollinator pan trap, timed observation and transect data |
Description | These data were collected to better understand the pollinator communities found in UK crops field of apples, strawberries and field beans. Pollinator abundance data was collected in 8 conventionally managed fields of each crop using pan traps, timed observations and transect walks implemented simultaneously. Data were collected from 6 locations within each field over several survey rounds in weather conditions meeting basic requirements. Abundance of broad taxonomic groups of pollinators were recorded using each method as well as diversity metrics and flower density in each field. |

Title | Data from: Monitoring insect pollinators and flower visitation: the effectiveness and feasibility of different survey methods |
Description | 1. The status of pollinating insects is of international concern, but knowledge of the magnitude and extent of declines is limited by a lack of systematic monitoring. Standardised protocols are urgently needed, alongside a better understanding of how different methods and recorders (data collectors) influence estimates of pollinator abundance and diversity. 2. We compared two common methods for sampling wild pollinating insects (solitary bees, bumblebees and hoverflies), pan traps and transects, in surveys of 1km countryside squares (agricultural and semi-natural habitats) and flowering crop fields across Great Britain, including the influence of local floral resources (nectar sugar availability or crop flower density) on the insects sampled. Further, we compared the performance of recorders with differing expertise (non-specialist research staff, taxonomic experts and non-expert volunteers) in applying methods. 3. Pan traps and transects produced compositionally distinct samples of pollinator communities. In the wider countryside, pan traps sampled more species of solitary bee and hoverfly. In flowering crops, transects recorded greater numbers of individual bumblebees, but fewer species. 4. Across all taxonomic groups and countryside and crop samples, transects generally had lower rates of species accumulation per individual collected than pan traps. This demonstrates that differences between methods in estimating richness are not due to sampling effort alone. However, recorders possessing greater taxonomic expertise can produce species accumulation data from transects that is almost commensurate with pan trapping. 5. The abundance and species richness of pollinators (except solitary bees) on transects in the wider countryside was positively related to the availability of estimated nectar sugar. In crops, pollinator abundance responses to flower densities were idiosyncratic according to crop type, but overall the response was positive and negative for transects and pan traps, respectively. 6. Given these taxonomic and context-specific differences in method performance, we assess their suitability for monitoring pollinating insect communities and pollination services. We discuss the relevance of these findings within the context of achieving standardised, large-scale monitoring of pollinating insects. |

Title | TESSA Toolkit for ecosystem service site-based assessment |
Description | This toolkit is designed to overcome this obstacle by providing practical guidance on how to identify which services may be significant at a site of interest, what data are needed to measure them, what methods or sources can be used to obtain the data and how to communicate the results. The toolkit emphasizes the importance of comparing estimates for alternative states of a site (for example, before and after conversion to agriculture) so that decision-makers can assess the net consequences of such a change, and hence the benefits for human well-being that may be lost through the change or gained by conservation. The toolkit has attempted to find a balance between simplicity and utility of developing convincing information for decision-makers and therefore excludes consideration of some of the more advanced concepts in ecosystem services. This is so that it can be used by non-experts, yet still provide scientifically robust information. |
