Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description We have demonstrated that differences in the susceptibility of Brazilian wheat varieties to Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) is not due to the presence of a known potent gene for resistance called Fhb1. This implies that the resistance present may be novel and used to complement that found in other varieties across the globe
Exploitation Route Others can select the varieties that show resistance to FHB and undertake genetic studies to identify the novel resistnaces present. This information can then be passed to plant breeders attempting to enhance resistance to FHB.
Sectors Agriculture, Food and Drink

Description This information is being used by wheat breeders in Brazil to enhance levels of FHB resistance in their varieties. Information relating to the loci in resistance to wheat blast is being used by wheat in Brazil to enhance levels of blast resistance in their varieties

Results and Impact Over 200 delegates from across the globe attended the meeting. My presentation sparked many questions and further discussions on the implications of our findings for improving the resistance of wheat to FHB and reducing the risk of mycotoxins accumulating in grain and posing a threat to consumers

Results and Impact The potential of increasing resistance to Fusarium head blight by eliminating susceptibility factors rather than the conventional approach of introducing resistance factors was discussed at length. This approach stimulated much interest as a means to tackle a disease where there is a paucity of effecive resistance
