Description This was a very valuable grant in establishing research collaboration with China and Vietnam. As per the objectives of the project, the grant helped in visits of scientists to different Institutions for training and discussions on collaborations.
Exploitation Route The collaborations established as part of the project has already led to a major successful grant with Vietnam and Pakistan under the BBSRC-ZELS initiative. It has also helped in establishing a Joint Centre for Avian Disease Research in China involving multiple partners from the UK and China.
Sectors Agriculture, Food and Drink,Communities and Social Services/Policy,Education,Pharmaceuticals and Medical Biotechnology

Description The award has led to the extensive network of collaboration with the China Academic Institutions and industry that led to the establishment of the Newton Funded 'Centre of Excellence for Research on Avian Diseases (CERAD)'. The Centre has provided immense opportunities for research collaboration, Joint research projects, conferences and exchange visits of students and young post-doctoral scientists between UK and Chinese academic institutions. This has led to the application of gene editing technologies to develop innovative multivalent herpesvirus vaccines against multiple avian diseases. Project has also contributed to the reduction of avian leukosis, a major poultry disease that is threatening poultry health across most parts of China. It is estimated that these efforts have reduced the direct losses by about £35 million. As a recognition of the success of the project, it was shortlisted to the prestigious Newton Prize 2019.
