Description Our major achievements for this grant:
•assessment of relative research strengths based at KCL and in the UK, as well as those at National Yang-Ming University, National Taiwan University, Taipei Medical University, and Academica Sinica in Taipei, Taiwan.
•exchange of expertise in the fields of tissue engineering, material sciences, molecular and cellular biology and regenerative medicine.
•laboratory visit to the Dept of Craniofacial Development and Stem Cell Biology at Guy's Hospital, King's College London.
•outline a collaboration strategy for future exchange of students and scholars, as well as routine bilateral workshops.
•provide an opportunity for postgraduate research (PGR) training, in the form of PGR talks and posters, as well as a panel discussion on international research opportunities.
•identify areas of potential research overlap, with an emphasis on future submission of bilateral grant applications (Taiwan National Science Council and UK Research Councils)

Description In September 2012, we held a three-day symposium on stem cell and cancer research at King's College London. This workshop, jointly funded by the BBSRC and NSC, brought together leading biologists from KCL and Taiwan's National Yang-Ming University. Research themes discussed included biomaterials and tissue engineering; stem cells and regenerative medicine; cancer metastasis and biomarkers; and novel approaches to protein control. Participants included Professor Paul Sharpe from KCL, Professor Oscar Lee from the National Yang-Ming University and Professor Fiona Watt, who recently joined KCL to head a new Centre for Stem Cells & Regenerative Medicine. We were also joined by delegates from the Taiwan National Science Council, including Director General Tsung-Tai (Willis) Lin. A follow-up visit was undertaken in May 2013. This allowed us to tour Taiwanese facilities and meet with researchers. Plans for a future workshop and a management plan for collaboration have been developed.
